International Women's Day

When:  Thursday, March 8, 2012
Where: Everywhere
What:   International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday.
Why:   Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honors the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911. 2011 was the Global Centenary Year. Let's reinvent opportunity for all women!

On March 7, 2011, Center for Domestic Peace was the beneficiary and collaborator, along with GlobalChill.org and the United Nations Association - San Francisco, Marin and the Sonoma chapters, of a multi-media event celebrating the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day in Mill Valley, CA. The following is a 5 minute video from the evening’s celebration. Enjoy moving and inspiring clips from young women from around the world as they state what they want most for women in the world….
